Levelator

Would I use this to mix a show? No. But it looks like it could be a handy tool for doing some quick work on rought audio, and it's free. They bill themselves as a way for podcasters to even out audio levels that are all over the place. I hope I get a chance to play around with it soon. If I don't, keep it in mind if you have a lot of tricky audio that needs some work.

Grading Sweet

While we are on the topic of color, here's an interesting product. It looks like it has some cool color effects. I think the daddy of color products is Red Giant's Magic Bullet. But at $400, I have to file that under too expensive for Link. In lieu of Magic Bullet, this looks like an easy way to create some different "looks". Costs $89.
LAFCPUG's website has a tutorial on using Grading Sweet. I found it over at DVguru.com.

Calibrate Your Monitor

Videomaker has done a good video tutotial on how to calibrate your monitor. It is mostly about how to calibrate a production monitor with a blue-only mode. But they also mention how you can calibrate on a TV using a blue gel filter. You can use Rosco #80 or Wratten #47B Blue. If we don't have one of these already, I should pick one up at Gasser's.

The tutorial is in 2 parts. You can go right to the tutorials by hitting the Tips & Techniques link on the right side of the page. I found this via DVGuru.com Please watch this when you have 15 minutes. BTW, this isn't something you do once and forget about it. You should definitely calibrate before you do any color correction or critical color work.
