Vidi is a simple, free application that turns your Mac into a timed video recorder. It works with any firewire analog digitzer and records to DV files. I read about its use on this article "Set analog recording stop times using Vidi". We do a bunch of recording on DVD Recorders of news programs. This could be an alternative. EyeTV, which is a nice hardware-software combo, can record directly to MPEG-2 which can be nice for archiving purpose--just burn your video right to DVD with no encoding.
